Compositionally graded joints between magnetically dissimilar alloys achieved through directed energy deposition

Compositionally graded cylinders comprising FeCo-2V, a soft magnetic alloy, and 316L stainless steel, were produced by directed energy deposition incorporating two different gradient lengths. Five distinct regions in the microstructure observed both as-printed annealed gradients. When normalized for length, gradients showed similar grain size microhardness profiles. In tensile tests, samples failed region with an effective total “composite” strain of 20-30% overall strength approaching that wrought 316L. The FeCo-2V region. Neither exhibited failure Molecular dynamics simulations used to calculate as function composition, showing good correlation experimental trends but not absolute values. This work demonstrates tunability site-specific properties using blown powder gradually grade from steel monolithic component.
